Since Illustrator 9 in June 2000, the format has carried a PDF copy of the artwork. That copy lets Inkscape, Mac Preview and Acrobat read many AI files. An AI file saved without it opens nowhere else.
Open yours in Inkscape for free or in Illustrator for full editing. Convert it to PDF, SVG or PNG from either one. Read section 4 first if another program shows a blank page.
A client emails logo-final.ai and your computer does not know what to do with it. You have no Adobe subscription and the deadline is today. Plenty of people start searching for an AI file from exactly that spot.
AI stands for Adobe Illustrator. Adobe shipped Illustrator 1.0 for the Macintosh in January 1987. The program has saved artwork in this format ever since. Wikipedia's Illustrator history dates the first version.
Illustrator draws with vectors. Instead of coloring grids of pixels it stores points, curves, fills and strokes as numbers. Scale logos from business cards to billboards and the edges stay sharp.
The format belongs to Adobe. Wikipedia's Adobe Illustrator Artwork entry calls it proprietary and says it began as a native format named PGF. Early AI files were restricted EPS files. Today's files still carry more than one kind of data inside.
Newer AI files carry a PDF copy of the artwork. That copy lets other programs draw the AI file without Illustrator. Section 2 shows where it sits.
An AI file is the editable master of a drawing. Anyone can view the PDF copy inside it. Only Illustrator reads every layer, effect and setting the designer saved.

An AI file is a PDF container holding two things. One is a page any PDF reader can draw. The other is private data that only Illustrator can use.
Open a current AI file in any text editor and the first characters read %PDF. Illustrator wraps its own data inside a PDF container. The National Archives PRONOM record lists %PDF-1.5 at the start of an Illustrator CC 2020 file.
Two things share that container. One is the PDF copy, a page any PDF reader can draw. The other is Illustrator's private data, which holds the layers, live effects and settings that only Illustrator understands.
Wikipedia describes the trick plainly. The PDF copy works by embedding the full PGF data inside the saved PDF. PDF readers skip the private part and draw the page.
Adobe documents the cost of that second copy. Choosing the option stores two formats in one file. The file grows. Adobe's file size article also says Illustrator embeds linked files automatically when you choose it.

Registry records let you read an AI file by its first bytes. Version 9 files have two patterns. The second starts with PostScript rather than a PDF header. That second pattern has no PDF header in front, which fits an AI file saved without the PDF copy.

Try it on your own file. Open a copy in Notepad or TextEdit and read the first line. A %PDF start means other programs have something to draw. Never save changes to the copy you inspected.
Inkscape opens most modern AI files for free. Mac Preview opens them when a PDF copy exists. Both depend on that copy. Section 4 shows how to check for it.
You need two answers before you choose a program. Do you want to look at the artwork or edit it? And does your AI file hold PDF content? Looking needs only a viewer. Editing every layer needs Illustrator.

Inkscape is the best free route. Wikipedia lists AI as an import format for Inkscape. The Inkscape 1.0 release notes explain the limit. Files from Illustrator 8 and below lost direct import. Newer files still open if they contain an embedded PDF.
Apple Preview works the same way. An Adobe Community expert says Preview and Keynote can open AI files saved with PDF compatibility. The thread on Mac Preview also reports mis-drawn elements on recent macOS releases.

Some people rename a copy from .ai to .pdf and open it. It works only when the AI file starts with a PDF header, because then it is a real PDF with extra data inside. Adobe Community experts call it an emergency move and prefer opening the AI file with Acrobat.
The renamed duplicate opens as a normal PDF. Save it as PDF and keep going.

Always rename a duplicate and never the original. Renaming your only copy makes a small problem confusing.
PDF compatible means Illustrator saved a PDF copy next to its own data. With the copy, other programs can draw your artwork. Without it, only Illustrator can.
Every Illustrator save dialog offers one choice that most designers never think about. Create PDF Compatible File sits in the Illustrator Options window. Adobe's saving artwork page lists it next to the version, compression and ICC profile settings.
When it is on, Illustrator stores the PDF copy and embeds linked files. When it is off, the AI file stays smaller and works for Illustrator alone. Choose the wrong setting for a client and they see nothing.
Adobe shows what the missing copy looks like. Programs that expect PDF content show this message when they meet an AI file saved without it.

The same message says the AI file should be saved again from Illustrator with the option on. Only the designer can do that step, because nobody else can add the missing copy.
Cloud saves skip the dialog. An Adobe Community expert says there is no such option when you save to the cloud. Save a local copy with Save As when you need to send the AI file to someone without Illustrator.
The answer is a missing PDF copy. The AI file itself is fine. Damage is the rarest cause on the list.
An AI file that refuses to open carries a simple cause. Work down this list in order. Item one is the most common reason a client or colleague cannot see your artwork.
.ai files to the wrong app, open the AI file from inside the program instead.Three of those five sit outside the artwork. Check the size, check the first line and check your association before you call the AI file broken. If all three look right, read section 10.

Do not pay to repair an AI file. Paid repair offers cannot rebuild artwork that never finished copying. The free routes in section 3 test the AI file for you.
Missing fonts and missing links cause nearly all wrong looking AI files. Package the file and the problem goes with it.
Artwork that opens but looks wrong has few culprits. Fonts go missing. Linked images go missing. A viewer draws the PDF copy while Illustrator draws the private data. The two do not always match.

Ask the sender three questions before you spend time on a bad looking file. Which Illustrator release saved it? Was Create PDF Compatible File on? Did the fonts and linked images come in a package? Those answers explain every row in the table above.
Illustrator warns about missing fonts when it opens an AI file. The package report names them too. The fix is to install the font or swap it for one you own.
Adobe's Package command gathers the document with the files it depends on. It creates a folder with the Illustrator document, the fonts it needs, the linked graphics and a text report.
A package fixes the sender's side of the problem. If you are the receiver, send the report to the designer and ask for a package with PDF content on.
Photo files add another wrinkle. Raster artwork placed inside an AI file stays raster. A PSD file linked into a layout keeps its own limits. Link it carefully.
Illustrator converts an AI file to PDF, SVG, EPS and PNG. Inkscape does PDF, SVG and PNG for free. Ghostscript reads a PDF copy from the command line.
Choose the exit first and the method follows. PDF, SVG and EPS keep your artwork as vectors. PNG converts it into pixels at one fixed size. Illustrator does all four conversions. Free programs handle three.
In Illustrator choose File, then Save As. Select Adobe PDF. The result keeps vectors and text. The PDF format is what printers and clients expect. Without Illustrator, open the AI file in Inkscape and save a PDF. A renamed duplicate also works when the PDF copy exists.
Illustrator saves SVG through Save As and also lists it in its Export As formats. In Inkscape, open the AI file and save as SVG, which is Inkscape's native format. SVG is a W3C standard. Browsers draw it.
Illustrator lists PNG and JPEG among its Export As formats. Choose the pixel size you need before you export, because a PNG cannot grow later. Inkscape exports PNG too.
Ghostscript is the command line route. Rename a duplicate with a PDF copy to logo.pdf and write gs -sDEVICE=png16m -r300 -o logo.png logo.pdf. Wikipedia describes Ghostscript as an interpreter for PostScript and PDF that rasterizes documents.
Illustrator saves EPS through Save As. Adobe lists the EPS options, including the Illustrator version, preview format, transparency handling and embedded fonts. Plain EPS loses live transparency. Keep the AI file as your master. Our EPS file page explains the details.
Online converters get your artwork. Upload sites receive your logo. Many cannot read an AI file that lacks a PDF copy. The programs above work on your own computer and cost nothing or already sit on your desk.
Keep AI for your master and send PDF to printers. Use SVG for websites and EPS only when an old workflow asks for it.
Four formats compete for the same job, which is carrying vector artwork. They differ in who can edit them and how much of the original design they keep. Match the format to the person who receives it.

Send a PDF. Printers expect it and it needs no Illustrator.
Keep the AI file with the PDF copy switched on, plus a package.
Plotters and cutters read yet another family. If your artwork is going to a plotter or vinyl cutter, PLT files and HPGL files are the instruction formats those machines read.
CAD files sit far from AI files. A STEP file or an IGES file holds 3D engineering geometry. STL files hold printable meshes. None of them opens in Illustrator the way an AI file does.
Raster formats sit at the opposite end. Camera files like ARW, CR2, NEF, RAF and CRW record pixels. TGA, PCX and DDS are image formats of the same kind. Vector tracing can convert one into artwork.
The PDF copy arrived with Illustrator 9 in 2000. New versions open old files. Old versions cannot read new features.
Illustrator changed what its file holds in one big step. First the format was plain PostScript. Then Illustrator 9 added the PDF copy in June 2000. Every version since offers it. Which program wrote your file decides who can open it.

Compatibility works in one direction. A new Illustrator opens old AI files. An old one cannot read features it has never heard of. Adobe lets you choose an older version in the Illustrator Options window. It warns that you can lose data when you do.
Illustrator 8 and below wrote plain PostScript with no PDF copy. Inkscape dropped direct import of those files in version 1.0 and suggests renaming a copy to .eps as a workaround. Old files are best opened in Illustrator itself.
Year names add a second layer of confusion. Adobe calls the October 2025 release Illustrator 2026. Wikipedia lists the same release as version 30. Quote the version number when you ask a designer for help, because it never changes.
Version names confuse people. Illustrator 2026 is version 30. An AI file from release 30 can lose layers in release 28 unless the sender saves to an older version. Ask the sender which release made the AI file before you spend an hour on it.
Get the AI file again, read its first line and try Inkscape or Acrobat on a duplicate. Copies that were cut off cannot be rebuilt.
Recovery depends on what the damage is. An AI file that lost its tail cannot return. An AI file whose PDF copy survived can give back the artwork, though not the layers. Start with the free checks, because they cost nothing.
%PDF start means the PDF copy can still be readable.The first line tells you the most. Without a PDF start there is no PDF copy to rescue. Only Illustrator can read what is left. Cut off files without a copy lose the missing part for good.
Illustrator keeps recovery data for crashes. Adobe's recovery article describes the recovery methods that come with Illustrator. The File Handling preferences hold the recovery data setting. Switch it on before the crash, not after.
After a crash, relaunch Illustrator and follow Adobe's steps for recovered documents. Save the result under a new name at once with File, then Save As. Keep the old file as it is until you have checked the recovered one.
Never overwrite the only copy. Every repair attempt should start from a duplicate. A failed attempt on your last copy ends the AI file. No tool can undo that.

The container is documented by registry records. Adobe does not document the private data inside it. Only Illustrator reads all of it.

Two types share one extension. The second is a game file. No vector viewer opens it. A text editor tells the two apart in seconds.
The record for version 1.0 shows the roots. Those files begin %!PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-1.2 followed by a creator line naming Adobe Illustrator 1.0. They were plain PostScript. The PostScript format explains that heritage.
Fonts, links or a stale PDF copy. Package the AI file and compare.
