What do you understand by EDB File format?


EDB is the file format of exchange database. It uses a set of databases to store its directory, mail and public folder information. Exchange is designed to scale to large environment. These files contain all of the messages, attachments properties that exchanges exposes via MAPI and WebDAV. Exchange has always used a custom database engine known as the Extensible storage engine (ESE). Edb file extension is typically used as an exchange information store database and this database typically serves the non-SMTP (Simple mail transfer protocol) files stored on your MS exchange server.

Edb file can be divided into two parts:

  • private.edb:- Private.edb file is used by Microsoft Exchange Server to store private communication.
  • public.edb:- Public.edb file is a public folder used by Microsoft Exchange Server to store public communication, it means that email and attachment shared in group will be stored in the public.edb file (pub.edb).

How to open EDB file?

  • STEP1: Go to EDB file, right click on this file.
  • STEP2: Select Open with option.
  • STEP3: Select the compatible application that open EDB file. (If compatible application not available to open EDB format file, So go to STEP 4)
  • STEP3: Use Exchange EDB viewer tool to open EDB format file without the need of any framework installation.

How to reduce the size of EDB file?


Exchange server mostly used by business organization where it store emails, calender, calenders and contacts etc and is easy to handle. But, if the size of the EDB file increase it masy lead to corruption of file.

  • STEP 1: To manage EDB file, firstly you need to take a backup of your EDB file.
  • STEP 2: Now, Delete unwanted mailboxes from the EDB file.
  • STEP 3: Do Offline Defragmentation
